Sustaining and growing cricket

We work to develop young, international, club and casual cricketers to ensure that the game is sustainable long term in the Grand Duchy. More than ten domestically nurtured players have represented Luxembourg at international level.

We also understand the importance of youth cricket in Luxembourg community life. It is a way to make and sustain contacts with people from different backgrounds.

Girls are as equally welcome as boys, and our non-contact sport lends itself to being played in mixed groups.

Most of our youth players have parents who have their origins in cricket playing countries although increasing they are coming from non-traditional cricket backgrounds. We have a pro-active programme promoting the game in Luxembourgish and international schools.

Training

Training for young players aged between 5 and 18 inclusive is coordinated and run by Luxembourg Cricket, with the support of all clubs; the Optimists CC, Communities CC, Star CC and Maidens CC in particular.  More than 200 young people have participated in our programme over the last ten years. See this website for details.

Training takes place throughout the year, indoors and outdoors. Regular weekly sessions are run by volunteer coaches, usually parents, several of whom have England Cricket Board level 1 or 2 qualifications. Almost all have taken an official basic first aid course.

April until late September, training takes place on Sunday mornings at Walferdange. From October through to March sessions are held indoors in various gym facilities. All sessions include a mixture of skill exercises, games and matches played under controlled, safe conditions.

Coaching is normally carried out in English although several coaches speak French and many of the kids speak Luxembourgish and can translate when necessary.

Matches

Games are organised internally and with federations and clubs from other countries. Young players are encouraged to make themselves available for men’s and women’s club games.

Wolves CC is a development side primarily for those aged 16 to 19. It plays in the adult Luxembourg league and has its own training sessions. Participation requires a good level of cricketing ability and is on a selection-only basis. See Webpage, Facebook and CricHQ

Summer Cricket Academy

The annual summer Cricket Academy week has been running since 2005. It is a five-day training programme with up to 40 children, featuring skills development sessions leading to a gala of matches on the Saturday, to which family and friends are invited. An experienced professional coach leads the programme with support from local coaches and parents.
